JOHNNY STORY N0 13 JOHNNY HAS A COLD & PLANS A SHOW 27.10.08
Johnny woke up feeling a bit poorly. He had a cold and felt pretty miserable. When his mummy came up to his bedroom to wake him up he told her how he felt and she said she would bring him some medicine to make him feel better. This did not work very well and by lunchtime he still felt awful.
“There is only one thing that might make me better”, said Johnny to his mum. “And what would that be, young man ?” she replied. “No don’t tell me”, she said. “You would like the animals to come and see you instead of you going to see them”.
“Oh, mummy, that would be wonderful and I am sure it would make me feel so much better”, said Johnny. “In that case I will see what I can do”, and with that his mummy disappeared downstairs. She went out into the garden and climbed on to the big box that Johnny used to get over the wall and into the forest. As she gazed over the wall she shouted. “Hello, are there any animals nearby ?”
“Well I’m nearby”, said a squeaky voice and Johnny’s mummy saw Maurice Monkey swinging through some trees. “Can I help you ?” Johnny’s mummy explained what had happened. “Poor Johnny is feeling a bit off colour . Nothing serious. Just a cold- but he could do with cheering up and he has a show to produce.”.
Maurice Monkey had the answer. “I will round up some of the animals and we will come and visit poor old Johnny and try to cheer him up a bit.” “That would be wonderful” said Johnny’s mummy and off went Maurice Monkey to tell the other animals what had happened. Johnny’s mummy unlocked the gate so that the animals get into the garden.
Within an hour there was a knock on Johnny’s bedroom door. “He managed to whisper a rather wheezy, “Come in”, and suddenly in came Ernie Elephant, followed by Gerry Giraffe, Tommy Tiger and his cousin Teresa, Clarence Crocodile, Larry Lion and Arthur Ape. All of them were carrying little boxes wrapped up in brightly coloured paper. They had brought Johnny presents to cheer him up.
Johnny could not believe how kind the animals were. He started to feel a little better already. His mummy brought up a tray of biscuits and a teapot , milk and sugar. “You must all be ready for a snack”, she said as she started to poor out the tea into mugs. The animals all sat down round Johnny’s bed and had their snacks. Tommy Tiger said he thought they should all sing Johnny a nice song to make him feel better. Teresa and Arthur were very good at singing and sang a lovely lullaby which made Johnny feel sleepy. He was soon fast asleep and the animals quietly left his room and tip toed downstairs, out into the garden, opened the gate Johnny’s daddy had made and back into the forest.
Later in the day, about teatime, Ernie looked over the wall just as Johnny’s mummy was hanging out the washing. “How is young Johnny getting on?”, he said “Oh he is feeling so much better,” she answered. “He will be up and about tomorrow and he told me to tell you how pleased he was to see you all this morning”.
Ernie opened a bag that was slung round his neck “Would you please give Johnny a few of my delicious buns? They are just out of the oven and still warm “. Johnny’s mummy took the buns up to Johnny who was still in bed. He eat one and suddenly he felt much better. No sign of a cold. He decided that Ernie’s buns were not only delicious but cured colds as well.
But there was work to do. Johnny remembered that he had thought of getting all the animals to put on a show to entertain their animal friends and humans would be invited as well.
He thought where they might put on such a show and then he had an idea. Perhaps they could put it on at Oakland Primary School, that is where Johnny went. There was a large hall with a stage and it would be just right for a show.
Johnny arranged a meeting with the most talented animals to see how the show could be
produced. The animals sat round in a circle and Johnny stood in the middle. “Now”, he announced with a voice of authority, “Who can sing ?” Teresa Tiger put up her tail, Harry Ape said, “I not a bad singer”. Ronnie Rhinoceros mumbled something about a song he had written specially for the show and he could sing it now if anyone wanted him to” “Not just now” said Johnny. “I am just making a list of who can do what and then we will hold auditions to see what you all can do”.
Soon Johnny’s list was quite long. There were animals who could sing, dance, do magic tricks, acrobatics and tell jokes- but not all at the same time !
One by one they came to the centre of the circle and did their act. Johnny thought they were all very good and he made another list of who should go on first. There would be an interval when the audience could get for a lemonade or an ice cream. Ernie Elephant said he would like to be in charge of the catering and drinks.
There would be a big finale with everyone on stage singing, “There’s No Business Like Show Business” and the audience would be invited to join in. All they had to do was to rehearse until they were all perfect. That, thought Johnny, might take a little time
They rehearsed every day from early morning until night They all worked very hard and those animals who couldn’t sing, dance or tell jokes helped with the stage lighting, selling tickets, and advertising the show in the local newspaper to let everyone know when the show would be on and where it would be on.
