Johnny Story N0. 12 ERNIE ELEPHANT BUILDS A HOUSE 25.10.08
Ernie Elephant sat in his big chair doing some serious thinking. “It’s no good”, he said to himself. “I will have to build a bigger house. Everytime I turn round I bang my head on the ceiling or knock the table over, or break a vase, or trip over the carpet. I must have a bigger house”.
Just then there was a knock at the door. Ernie got up from the chair, banged his head on the ceiling, knocked over the table, broke a vase and tripped over the carpet on his way to open the door.
Who should be standing there but Johnny with his little dog Spot. “Oh, dear, oh dear”, said Ernie. “I am so pleased to see you but do be careful you don’t fall over all the mess”. Johnny and Spot carefully went into Ernie’s house. “You know what? ” said Johnny.”I think you need a bigger house”.
The next day all the animals held a meeting and decided to help Ernie build a bigger house. They drew plans of how it should look and worked out how much it would cost. They got in touch with a man who could supply all the parts and in no time at all they were all busy building Ernie’s new house. It was to be a bungalow. That is a house with no upstairs. Ernie was hopeless at climbing upstairs and in a bungalow he could just walk from the living room to the kitchen and bedroom If they built the rooms big enough Ernie would not be constantly banging into things.
It took several weeks to build the bungalow . Johnny kept an eye on how it was all going and sometimes things did go wrong. Maurice Monkey had brought along his brother Malcolm who was an expert on screwing things together but sometimes screwed the wrong things together, and Ally Alligator had a cousin who came and painted the window frames and door but somehow managed to splash paint on to Spot’s back so that he had not just a black spot but a green spot, a blue spot and an orange spot as well.
Eventually the bungalow was finished and they all decided to let Ernie Elephant try it out. They gave him the key to the door and he pushed the door open with his long trunk. Very carefully he entered and walked slowly across the room without knocking anything over. He didn’t break a vase or trip over the carpet. He spun round with his long trunk straight out and smiled. “Whoopee !” he shouted. “This is a fantastic house and I can bake my cakes in the kitchen without banging my head or getting stuck in the fridge”.
“How can I thank you all ?”. “Well said Johnny”, “you could have a party to welcome all your friend into your new house”. “Wonderful idea,” said Ernie. “You organise it, Johnny and I will bake some scrumptious cakes”,
All the animals brought something along to the party. Tommy Tiger and his cousin Teresa borrowed some chairs from Johnny’s school, Oakland Primary School (the head teacher was very kind), Larry Lion came with some bottles of lemonade, and Clarence Crocodile brought some fish he had caught in the river where he lived.
It was the best party they had ever had. They played pass the parcel and Ernie played the piano and sang some really funny songs. Teresa Tiger did some conjuring tricks making things disappear and reappear again as if by magic. Maurice Monkey and his brother Malcolm tap danced as Ernie played the piano.
Johnny had an idea. Maybe they could put on a show and make some money to help poorer animals who lived in the forest, but you will have to wait for the next story to see what happened.
