JOHNNY STORY NO.11 24.10.08 A TRIP TO THE ZOO
Johnny felt someone trying to wake him up. It was his Mummy. “Come along you sleepy head. Wakey, wakey”. Johnny slowly opened his eyes and saw his Mummy smiling as she gently pushed him. Johnny could see that it was a bright, sunny day. The sun was shining through his bedroom window and he began to think about what he would do
Johnny went to Oakland Primary School but it was a school holiday so he was free to do whatever he wanted. However his Mummy had other ideas.
“As it is such a lovely day your Daddy and I thought we would all go to the zoo. You would like that, wouldn’t you, Johnny ?” Johnny was not so sure. Why would he want to go to a zoo when all his friends were animals and lived just the other side of the garden wall ? But a trip out in the car and perhaps a picnic or a meal in a café might be fun.
Soon after breakfast Johnny and his Mummy and Daddy jumped into the car and off they went. It was quite a long way to the zoo and as the road went through the forest Johnny felt sure he would see some of his animal friends on the way.
It wasn’t long before they came across a very large object blocking the road. Johnny’s Daddy stopped the car and got out to see what was holding them up. “Would you believe it”, he said as he climbed back into the car. “It’s an elephant and he is sitting in the road calmly eating his breakfast”.
Johnny smiled. He knew who the elephant was. “I bet its Ernie Elephant”, he thought. “Just like him to sit in the road”. Johnny told his Daddy that he thought he could persuade the elephant to move out of the way and he jumped out of the car and ran over to the huge elephant. “Just as I thought,” said Johnny. “Ernie, what on earth are you doing sitting in the middle of the road ?”. “I am simply having my breakfast., don’t you know” said the elephant in a rather pompous manner. “ Well” said Johnny, “You will have to move. We are on our way to the zoo to see some polite animals”.
Ernie elephant sulked and slowly moved out of the road. “Might see you there then”, said Ernie. “We are all going to a meeting at the zoo to try to get those animals a day off so that they can come into the forest for a picnic” “That sounds like a splendid idea, “said Johnny”. “See you there then”. The car started up its engine and they continued on their way.
When they got to the zoo Daddy paid for the tickets and in they went. First they saw the monkeys. They had their own den where they could swing from tree to tree, jump about and have a really good time. “Excuse me,” said Johnny to one of the monkeys. “Do you know Maurice Monkey who lives in the forest. “Of course I do” said the monkey. “We all know Maurice and we know most of the other animals that live in the forest. We all want to go and see them and have a big, big picnic. Some of them are coming here today to try to get the zoo keeper to let us go and spend a day in the forest with all the forest animals”
Just then a bus arrived and can you guess who got off the bus ? Almost all Johnny’s animal friends from the forest. Clarence Crocodile, Alister Alligator, Larry Lion, Tommy Tiger, Gerry Giraffe, etc etc.
When they saw Johnny they all fussed round him and asked what he was doing at the zoo. “My Mummy and Daddy brought me here. Look that’s them standing looking at the animals in cages and talking to the zoo keeper. “In that case,” said Larry Lion, “Your Mummy and Daddy can help us to persuade the zoo keeper to let all his animals come to the forest for a picnic with us animals” And that is just what happened.
The zookeeper wasn’t sure it was a good idea. letting all his animals go off to the forest for a picnic. They might get lost and not come back. Supposing some of them decided to stay in the forest. What would he do then ? “Well”, said Johnny with a mischievous smile. “You could put some humans in the cages and let animals come to stare at them”.
“That is not a very good idea my boy”,. said the zoo keeper. “I will think about it” , he said as he scratched his chin. Johnny’s mummy and daddy joined in the discussion and eventually the zoo keeper agreed to let his animals have a picnic in the forest with all Johnny’s friends.
And so it was that the following Monday morning all the zoo animals paraded on the road outside the zoo ready to march off to the forest. At the head of the parade came the monkeys, followed by tigers, lions, giraffes, zebras and crocodiles waddling along behind.
In the forest there was lots of activity with all the forest animals busy preparing the picnic. Ernie Elephant had made some of his famous buns, Maurice Monkey had baked lots of cakes, sandwiches were brought along by two friends of Arthur Ape and lovely jellies had been delivered by Tommy Tiger and his cousin Teresa.
By ten o’clock the forest animals could hear the sound of footsteps clomping through the forest. “They are coming, ” shouted Horace Hippopotamus just as the long line of zoo animals appeared from round a bend in the road. Johnny looked on with a big smile as Tommy Tiger yelled, “This way folks. Sit down and make yourself at home. And we will all sing a song.”. They sang a song about picnics and then they formed a queue to collect a plate and fork and spoon. The forest animals dished up the food and when everyone had been served they all sat down on the grass and enjoyed the delicious food. Lemonade was served up in glasses and then it was time for a sing song. Several of the forest animals were quite good singers and everyone joined in and sang along.
The day went quickly by as they all played games and sang songs. At five o’clock the zoo animals said goodbye and marched back to the zoo. The forest animals cleared up the mess and did the washing up. Johnny felt tired and said goodbye to the forest animals as he climbed over the big wall and went into the family home.
“You look very tired”, said Johnny’s mummy. “I am very tired and I just want to go to bed”, said the very tired little boy. His mummy got him ready for bed. Read him a bedtime story but before she had finished it Johnny was fast asleep.
